2026 is off and running and with the New Year comes Dry January. Dry January started in the UK back in 2015 as a challenge, it is not a detox for those with dependency issues. This campaign is aimed at people who have steadily been drinking a bit too much, too often, without realizing the effect that it’s having on their health. Enter the rise of non-alcoholic cocktails/mocktails as a trend that is here to stay.

While I don’t drink a ton, one of the most enjoyable parts of creating drink recipes is building a thoughtful flavor profile. Whether it’s my Strawberry Basil Margarita or Tajín Watermelon Margarita, I love taking familiar drinks and putting my own spin on them. That same approach carries over to mocktails, which have become more widely embraced as people choose not to drink for a night, a month, or longer.

The best mocktails rely on a few key elements working together: a base of unsweetened juice for flavor, fresh herbs or spices for depth, a simple homemade syrup for controlled sweetness, and a splash of acid to balance it all out. When done well, you still get the pleasure of a great drink—without the alcohol. That said, mocktails can still be a source of added sugar (from juice, tonic water, or syrups), so being mindful of what goes into your glass helps you sip smarter.

How To Make a Health(ier) Mocktail

  • Use seasonal ingredients! Seasonal fruit has natural sugar/sweetness and that cuts back from adding sugar and other add-ins. Frozen fruit makes for a great option too!
  • Add some bubbly from sparkling water, not sparkling wine or champagne as it’s sans alcohol. Add the bubbly for fizz to keep the drink festive and fun!
  • Go big on the flavors. When you add ingredients like ginger it not only takes the flavor up a notch but also has an added nutritional benefit. Muddle herbs, like basil and mint, to have some naturally flavorful oils and color.
  • Kombucha as a base works nicely. In addition to the potential gut health benefits, kombucha offers a slight effervescence to give your mocktail a little something extra to keep it exciting.

Ingredients: Frozen Pomegranate Mocktails

  • Pomegranate juice: make sure to look for 100% fresh Pomegranate juice. Cherry juice or a cranberry juice could be substituted as well.
  • Zero Proof Tequila: these alternatives to the real alcohol are popping up everywhere! They’re blended from natural botanicals and used a replacement for the liquor. You use them as a 1:1 replacement.
  • Fresh lime or lemon juice: Here’s your acid to help balance out the sweetness (even though pomegranate juice is a little on the tarter side!)
  • Simple Syrup: This is my simple go-to for a simple syrup. For this recipe, I add 1 cup of ginger to make a ginger simple syrup. Using herbs adds depth to the drink.
  • Fresh mint: Added to the drink for an additional pop of flavor!
  • Ice: We’re making a frozen pomegranate mocktail here, so ice is a must! I haven’t made this with just carbonated water in place of ice but let me know if you do give that a try!

How To Make a Frozen Pomegranate Mocktail

  1. Add fresh pomegranate juice, lime juice, Zero Proof Tequila replacement, fresh mint leaves, simple syrup, and ice to a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until slushy and smooth!
  3. Taste and adjust flavors (add more lime juice and/or simple syrup if you want a tad tarter or a tad sweeter!)
  4. Pour into a glass and garnish with a mint sprig and pomegranate arils.

Nutrition Notes (Dietitian Tip)

Pomegranate juice contains antioxidants and natural polyphenols, which can support heart health. For a mocktail that’s more blood sugar–friendly, balance portions and consider pairing your drink with food or adding extra ice and sparkling water to dilute sweetness without sacrificing flavor.

Easy Variations

  • Herbal twist: Switch the gingery simple syrup for a rosemary simple syrup
  • Citrus-forward: Add orange or blood orange juice in place of the pomegranate juice
  • Less sweet: Use half juice, half sparkling water before blending
  • Party-ready: Serve in a pitcher with extra bubbles added just before serving

Final Thoughts

Dry January and Sober October don’t mean skipping out on fun drinks—they’re an opportunity to get creative. These frozen pomegranate mocktails are refreshing, festive, and are proof that you can still celebrate alcohol-free!
