Trending Cocktails
Admittedly, I’m one to jump on a “trendy” cocktail any time of the year. The espresso martini had its first moment back in the ’90s and made a big comeback in the early 2010s. But it wasn’t until the pandemic and quarantine era that it really took off again — restaurants were offering DIY espresso martini kits and even selling them in plastic pouches to enjoy at home. You could say the espresso martini was buzzing in popularity once more (pun intended!).
Now, there’s a new contender shaking up the cocktail scene — the matcha martini. This vibrant green drink is the perfect balance of earthy, creamy, and energizing. As more people fall in love with matcha for its antioxidant benefits and gentle caffeine boost, it’s no surprise that it’s finding its way into cocktails. Whether you’re a matcha lover or just looking for a fun, Instagram-worthy twist on a classic, the matcha martini is quickly becoming the next “it” drink.
Health Benefits of Matcha
One of the reasons I love using matcha is that it’s more than just a pretty green powder — it’s packed with health benefits. Matcha is made from finely ground green tea leaves, meaning you’re consuming the entire leaf and getting a higher concentration of antioxidants, especially EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which supports heart health and may help reduce inflammation. It also provides a gentle, steady boost of caffeine paired with L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes focus and calm — no coffee jitters here! However, if you’ve noticed that your favorite matcha has gotten a bit pricier lately, you’re not imagining it. With matcha’s growing popularity worldwide and limited high-quality supply (since it’s primarily produced in Japan), prices have steadily increased. Still, a little goes a long way, and it’s worth investing in a good-quality matcha for both taste and health benefits.
Grades of Matcha
Matcha is a fine powder made from ground green tea leaves, originating in East Asia. So, instead of brewing a cup of tea with the tea leaves, this takes the tea leaves and grinds them up. You then dissolve these ground tea leaves with warm water to make a paste. Matcha is consumed as part of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and is an integral part of Japanese culture. Although there are currently no regulations to differentiate between “ceremonial” and “culinary” matcha, the ceremonial is typically a higher quality (the price and taste prove that!)
- Ceremonial – Ceremonial matcha is the highest grade. Uses include mixing it directly into the hot water and having it as tea. Ceremonial matcha comes from the youngest tea leaves.
- Culinary – Culinary matcha is much more affordable. Uses include adding it to smoothies, tea lattes, and baking. As I mentioned, it will depend on the brand, as the quality can vary significantly depending on the age and quality of the leaves that are picked.

Ingredients: Matcha Martini
- Matcha: Green tea powder. I say this all the time, but if there are only three ingredients in a recipe, aim to use high-quality ingredients. For matcha, refer to the description above of the different grades; it can have an earthy taste. I’ve heard many people say they dislike it. It’s important for that reason to buy a better, high-quality grade in order to have a better experience. My suggestion is to go for the ceremonial grade for this Iced Matcha Latte. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.
- Water/Ice – You’ll dissolve the matcha in water to create a paste and then add water to create the tea. Ice, to ensure our drink is cold vs hot. I live in an area where I need to filter the water, or else it tastes too much like chlorine.
- Milk – Use whichever milk you prefer. You can use oat milk, soy milk, again whichever milk you prefer. Opt for the unsweetened version so you can manage the amount of sugar added.
- Heavy Whipping Cream: A splash of heavy whipping cream adds a luxurious, velvety texture that balances the earthiness of the matcha and makes your martini feel truly indulgent. It also helps create that beautiful frothy top layer when shaken.
- Vodka – A martini isn’t a martini without vodka! Choose your favorite brand — smooth and clean-tasting vodkas work best since they let the matcha flavor shine. (If you prefer gin, you can absolutely experiment, but vodka keeps it classic.)
- Simple Syrup: This adds the right touch of sweetness to balance the slightly bitter notes of the matcha. You can make your own by combining equal parts sugar and water, or use a store-bought version. Adjust the amount to your taste depending on how sweet you like your cocktails.
- White Chocolate Creme de Cacao: Normally, I’m not one to recommend special ingredients, but this one is worth it. After testing a few versions, I found that white chocolate crème de cacao is what truly brings this cocktail together. It adds a subtle sweetness and creamy white chocolate flavor that complements the matcha perfectly — similar to how Kahlúa elevates an espresso martini. If you can’t find it, Irish cream liqueur makes a delicious alternative and gives a slightly richer flavor profile.

How To Prepare Matcha
Before you shake up your Matcha Martini, you’ll want to prepare the matcha first. Matcha powder needs to be whisked with a small amount of hot (not boiling) water until it’s smooth and frothy — this helps dissolve any clumps and brings out that signature vibrant green color. Once it’s well mixed, let it cool completely before adding it to your cocktail shaker. This step ensures your martini stays perfectly chilled and doesn’t get watered down when you mix it with ice and the other ingredients.
How To Make a Matcha Martini
- Prepare the matcha. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with 2 tablespoons of hot (not boiling) water using a bamboo whisk or small hand frother until smooth and frothy. This step helps dissolve the matcha and prevents clumps. Let the matcha cool completely before moving to the next step — this ensures your cocktail stays chilled and doesn’t dilute.
- Combine ingredients. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the prepared (and cooled) matcha, vodka, white chocolate creme de cacao, simple syrup, milk, and heavy whipping cream.
- Shake it up. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds. The goal is to chill the drink while creating that gorgeous frothy top layer.
- Strain and serve. Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass. If you want to get fancy, dust the top with a light sprinkle of matcha powder or white chocolate shavings. Serve immediately and enjoy your smooth, creamy, and slightly energizing Matcha Martini.

Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Matcha Martini
- Use ceremonial-grade matcha. It’s smoother, more vibrant, and less bitter than culinary grades — making a noticeable difference in both flavor and color.
- Cool the matcha before mixing. Warm matcha can melt the ice too quickly and water down the drink.
- Shake with purpose. A strong shake creates that beautiful foamy top that makes the cocktail look (and taste) bar-worthy.
- Adjust sweetness to taste. Matcha can be slightly earthy — if you prefer a sweeter drink, add a touch more simple syrup or use a flavored syrup like vanilla or honey.
- Make it alcohol-free. Swap the vodka and liqueur for extra milk and a drizzle of white chocolate syrup for a creamy mocktail version.
- Batch it for a crowd. Prepare a larger quantity of matcha ahead of time, then mix and shake individual portions when ready to serve for the freshest taste.
