Fresh, flavorful, and packed with a little heat, this cilantro jalapeño sauce is one of my favorite ways to brighten up a meal. It’s made with simple, real ingredients and comes together quickly, making it an easy addition to tacos, grain bowls, or even roasted veggies. I love sauces like this because they not only add big flavor but also encourage us to enjoy more vegetables and balanced meals in a delicious way.

If you’ve been around the blog for some time now, you’ll likely know ‘I’m all about the sauce’. And by sauce, I mean actual sauces, not the alcohol! Find a rotation of sauces to have on hand, and you’re golden for putting together a meal. Sauces are a great way to transform everyday ingredients into something exciting. Think a bright pesto tossed with pasta, a sesame ginger sauce drizzled over a rice bowl, or even an Italian dressing used as a marinade for shrimp. With just a few fresh ingredients, you can turn a basic meal into something flavorful and nourishing. Enter this cilantro jalapeño sauce.

One of my go-to ways to simplify meals is by building a bowl. Start with a grain, add a lean protein, load up on non-starchy vegetables, and finish it off with a flavorful sauce. This mix-and-match “formula” takes the stress out of planning dinner (or lunch) and keeps things flexible. Lately, I’ve been enjoying plenty of rice and beans. However, instead of always relying on guacamole or salsa, I wanted to switch things up with a new sauce to bring a fresh flavor twist to an old favorite.

What is Skyr?

Skyr is a thick, creamy Icelandic yogurt that’s packed with protein and lower in fat than traditional yogurt or mayonnaise, making it a great choice for boosting nutrition without adding extra calories. Using skyr in sauces, dressings, or dips adds creaminess while helping to keep blood sugar steady, support satiety, and contribute to balanced meals. While Greek yogurt is also a good option, skyr tends to be creamier with a milder flavor, which makes it especially versatile for sauces without overpowering the other ingredients.

Ingredients: Cilantro Jalapeño Sauce

  • Skyr – a thick, creamy Icelandic yogurt that gives the sauce richness and tang, while keeping it lighter than traditional mayo-based sauces. You can also use Greek yogurt; however, since it’s slightly thicker than Skry, you might need a little more lime juice to thin it out.
  • Cilantro – fresh and vibrant, it’s the star herb that gives the sauce its signature flavor. The great part about cilantro is that you can use the stems and leaves!
  • Lime Juice – adds brightness and acidity, balancing the heat and bringing all the flavors together. Limes vary in size and the juice they yield. For best results, microwave it for 20 seconds to yield more juice.
  • Garlic – Provides savory depth and a subtle kick that ties everything together.
  • Jalapeño – The star of the sauce, bringing just the right amount of heat and a fresh, peppery flavor. Remove the seeds and ribs for a more mild flavor or add the entire pepper for more spice!

How To Make Cilantro Jalapeño Sauce

  1. Prep the ingredients. Chop the cilantro, peel the garlic, and remove the seeds from the jalapeño.
  2. Add the skyr, cilantro, lime juice, garlic, and jalapeño to a blender or food processor.
  3. Blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed.
  4. Taste and adjust – add more lime juice for brightness, more cilantro for freshness, or an extra piece of jalapeño if you prefer a spicier flavor.
  5. Chill & Serve – Transfer to a jar or bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld. Serve drizzled over tacos, grain bowls, grilled meats, or roasted veggies.

Quick Tips

  • Adjust the heat: Remove the seeds and ribs from the jalapeño for a milder sauce, or leave them in for extra spice.
  • Storage: Keep in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Stir before serving.
  • Consistency: If you’d like a thinner sauce for drizzling, add 1–2 tablespoons of water, extra lime juice, or even olive oil and blend again.
  • Swaps: No skyr on hand? Use Greek yogurt, sour cream, or a dairy-free alternative.
  • Serving ideas: Try it as a taco topper, veggie dip, sandwich spread, or drizzle over grain bowls and grilled chicken.
