Blood sugar levels play a critical role in not just how you feel day-to-day—energy levels, focus, and mood— but also in reducing the risk of long-term complications, such as heart disease, kidney disease, and nerve issues. While that can sound overwhelming, the good news is that with knowledge, the right tools, and a little planning, blood sugar management can become a routine part of living well with diabetes and help you feel your best!

Normal Blood Sugar Levels

Normal blood sugar levels for someone without diabetes are defined as follows. Fasting levels range from 70 to 99 mg/dL and less than 140 mg/dL two hours after eating. For individuals without diabetes, the body can regulate blood glucose levels through the actions of insulin and other hormones. These values help maintain steady energy levels.

For people with diabetes, personalized targets will vary slightly depending on age, health status, and treatment goals. However, the goal remains to stay within a healthy range as consistently as possible. Hemoglobin A1c levels can provide a good indication of blood sugar levels over the past three months. However, keep in mind that a blood sugar level of 50 mg/dL is low, and a blood sugar level of 300 mg/dL is considered elevated. If we take these two levels and average them, one’s A1c level may appear to be ‘within range’. More recently, time in range—the amount of time spent within the target blood glucose range—provides a broader picture of what is needed to manage diabetes effectively.

Hemoglobin A1c is a measure of your average blood glucose levels over the last three months. A1c is the gold standard in diagnosing diabetes. If your fasting blood sugar level is over 100 mg/dL, this can be one of the first signs of insulin resistance. Diabetes is not typically diagnosed based on fasting blood sugar levels alone. Ordering an A1c test can help to provide insight into whether the levels are consistently elevated and diagnose whether diabetes is present. If the A1c is <5.7%, there is no diabetes. The range from 5.7%-6.4% is prediabetes. Diabetes is diagnosed at 6.5% or higher.

Factors Impacting BGM

A picture circulating on social media shows over 42 factors that affect blood glucose. The most commonly known are meals, movement, and medicine. However, other impacts include biological, too little sleep, stress, and illness. Additionally, environmental factors, such as outside temperature, altitude, and inaccurate BG readings, can affect the results. Understanding how these elements interact helps individuals with diabetes make more informed decisions and maintain better day-to-day blood glucose management (BGM).
